Additional union action in French Polynesia called off

2:26 pm on 20 October 2006

French Polynesia's A Tia I Mua union has called off its demonstration against the high cost of living which had been planned for the day after tomorrow.

The union was to take action with the teachers' union but decided to cancel its march as tension remains high in Papeete over a strike by another union and continued illegals road blocks.

The secretary-general of the union, Jean-Marie Yan Tu, says they don't want to pour oil onto the fire but opt for wise decisions.

But the union has vowed to strike in January if the government raises what it calls the financial pressure.
