Two senior PNG police officers arrested

11:08 am on 11 October 2006

The office of Papua New Guinea's police commissioner says the arrest of two senior police officers is more than just a tussle over the top job.

A police spokesman says the deputy police commissioner, Gari Baki and the assistant commissioner Raphael Haufolo were arrested to protect the integrity of the police force.

Baki has appeared in court on charges of insubordination and causing disaffection or division within the force ahead of the permanent appointment of a new police commissioner.

Haufolo has yet to appear in court.

Both men have been suspended on full pay while the court process continues.
