Samoa Democratic United party leader to announce decision over leadership row

6:27 am on 28 September 2006

The Samoa Democratic United party leader, Le Mamea Ropati, is expected to make an announcement today on whether the leadership row will be resolved within the party caucus or to call a public meeting with party supporters in order to resolve the dispute.

Le Mamea's move comes after a fruitless meeting yesterday with the party's deputy leader, Asiata Sale'imoa Va'ai, over the controversy surrounding the SDUP in the past two weeks about the leadership row.

It was the first meeting between the Opposition leader and his deputy since Asiata and his faction of four MPs had announced a change of leadership within the party.

The political move was strongly rejected by the leader because the issue of Asiata being the new leader was never discussed in a caucus meeting.
