General strike in New Caledonia continues

9:52 am on 26 September 2006

The general strike called by the Federation of New Caledonian Workers Union or CSTNC in New Caledonia continues

today.

The union, which is protesting about several issues including the high cost of living, delays in the construction of a nickel plant in the north, protection of local employment, and the presence of foreign workers in the mining sector, began its strike yesterday.

So far mainly the private sector is affected.

Unionists have closed down some companies and are demonstrating with banners outside others such as at the SLN nickel mining company headquarters in Noumea.

The union has not said how long it intends to strike for.
