Samoa HRPP expected to do well in by-election

8:57 am on 23 September 2006

Samoa's ruling Human Rights Protection party is expected to retain one of its two seats lost in last month's election petition rulings at the end of Fa'asalele'aga number two constituency's by-election today.

Of the six candidates confirmed for the ballot, five including two women are running for the HRPP party, and one running as an Independent.

The electoral office says the Samoa Democratic United Party or SDUP has no candidate.

The former MP for the constituency, Pa'u Sefo Pa'u, who was elected in this year's general election, was found guilty of bribery and treating in an election court ruling last month.

All polling booths will be opened at nine this morning and will close at three in the afternoon.
