Offices close in CNMI as part of government cost-cutting plan

1:30 pm on 8 September 2006

The Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas government is observing its first austerity holiday today, shutting down offices and forcing many employees to go on a three-day weekend.

The holiday applies to most government employees.

Only those normally required to operate on legal holidays or to maintain a 24-hour schedule are expected to report for work.

Regular employees who report for work today will not be paid.
