Fiji landowners want yachts to pay fees

The Cakaudrove Provincial Council in Fiji's north will press for all yacht owners to pay fees to the indigenous qoliqoli or foreshore owners in the area.

The spokesman for the Cakaudrove Provincial Holding Company, Jonecani Torocake, has told Radio Legend they are concerned about statements made by the hoteliers' representative Dick Smith that a yacht which stopped in Yasawa waters was made to pay.

Mr Torocake says it is time people realise that they have to pay for the use of resources.

He says tourism operators are making a lot of noises about the Qoliqoli Bill, which will provide proper management for all foreshore areas.

Mr Torocake says if they abuse the qoliqoli, they should be prepared to face the consequences.
