Review of structure of force a priority for new Vanuatu police commissioner

Vanuatu's new Police Commissioner says one of his priorities in the role will be to review the structure of the Police Force.

Lieutenant Colonel Patu Navoko Lui of the paramilitary Vanuatu Mobile Force, was officially sworn into the job last week and announced his aims for the Police Force at a ceremony on Monday.

Lt Col Patu's appointment ends a selection process which began last year and gives Vanuatu its first permanent commissioner in nearly two years.

He says he's confident he can help bring a united Force together following the internal conflicts of recent years.

And the commissioner says it's very important that the Force has a good structure that can be properly funded by the government.

"The Vanuatu Police Force is currently on a top-heavy structure where we have a lot of high positions and in fact we don't have enough police officers in normal police duties to do that. So one of my priorities here is to look at the Commissioner's office to establish the budget plans."
