Fiji government awaiting court ruling in Digicel case

2:08 pm on 28 August 2006

The Fiji ministry of information says the government will only look into the country's mobile phone dispute once the courts have ruled.

Vodafone holds the monopoly in Fiji's mobile phone market, but a Jamaican company, Digicel, wants to set up an additional service and has a provisional license to operate.

Vodafone is challengeing Digicel in Court.

Ba Provincial Holdings has fallen out with Digicel and has now urged the government to cancel Digicel's provisional licence.

The deputy secretary of the ministry of information, Eliki Bomani, says the matter needs attention.

But he says this has to be postponed.

"Basically, there is going to be no movement on grant of those in principle licenses until the current court case by Vodafone Fiji limited, versus the government of Fiji, versus the minister of information is resolved by the courts. 12"
