Vanuatu appoints a new police commissioner after a year long search

8:29 pm on 24 August 2006

Vanuatu's long wait for a permanent police commissioner is over, with Lieutenant Colonel Patu Lui of the paramilitary Vanuatu Mobile Force, sworn in this week.

He was appointed by President Kalkot Mataskelekele from a shortlist of five local candidates and sworn in yesterday.

It ends a selection process which began last year and gives Vanuatu its first permanent commissioner in nearly two years after Robert de Niro Obed got off side with the previous prime minister, Serge Vohor.

The current internal affairs minister, George Wells, has previously spoken of his desire to have an expatriate fill the role.
