Reconciliation planned to heal rift in Santo in Vanuatu

Vanuatu chiefs have agreed to hold a reconciliation next month after a dispute escalated and led to five members of one family being removed from Santo province.

The chiefs on Santo had also issued an ultimatum for several dozen other members of the Ulas family to leave the province by the end of this month.

The Internal Affairs minister, George Wells said last week he believed such a move could deny the Ulas family members their constitutional rights.

He visited Santo at the weekend and has told the Daily Post newspaper that the chiefs wanted to bring all the parties together to heal the rift.

The Prime Minister Ham Lini and the president of the Malvatumari Council of Chiefs, Paul Tahi, are expected to take part in the reconciliation exercise.
