Two women's organisations in Fiji are calling for the legalisation of abortion.
The Daily Post reports that the calls have come as more and more cases of infanticide surface around the country.
In recent days a mother of three was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her new-born baby while a Tongan student at the USP was placed on a two-year probation for dumping her baby.
A woman in Labasa is in custody for burying her baby alive on the recommendation of her mother.
The coordinator of the Fiji Women's Crisis Centre, Shamima Ali, says they will press for the legalization of abortion so pregnancies can be terminated safely.
Ms Ali says legal abortions will decrease the number of infanticides across the country.
The Fiji Women's Rights Movement is making a similar call with its director, Virisila Buadromo, saying that if safer health facilities were available, termination of pregnancies would be a better option for the women.
