A former opposition member of parliament, Kausea Natano, looks likely to be elected as Tuvalu new prime minister following last week's election.

Mr Natano said his group has the majority needed to form the next government.

Mr Natano, a former head of customs and finance has served one term in parliament.

He did not want to name members in his group except to confirm that the caretaker prime minister, Maatia Toafa, is among eight members who have joined his group.

The new government is expected to be announced on Monday.
