Cook Islands opposition to go ahead with legal challenge

3:20 pm on 4 August 2006

The retiring leader of the opposition Cook Islands Party, Sir Geoffrey Henry, says the party expects the snap election scheduled for September 26th to go ahead, but it will proceed with a legal challenge.

The opposition is disputing the right of the Queen's Representative to dissolve parliament.

Sir Geoffrey announced yesterday he was retiring after 41 years in politics.

He says while the election will go ahead, the legal challenge is important because the party wants to clarify whether the Queen's Representative acted correctly.

"Whether it changes the results of his decision in terms of whether it causes a reversal or not, that's not the point. The point is that a constitutional issue is in hand."
