Fiji cane railway blockade lifted

7:08 pm on 2 August 2006

Indigenous landowners at Sorokoba near Ba in Fiji's west have lifted the blockade of a cane railway line they put in place over three weeks ago.

Radio Fiji reports that the landowners agreed to follow an order from the Lautoka High Court after a meeting today between the Fiji Sugar Corporation and the Native Lands Trust Board.

But the spokesman for the landowners, Samuela Kautoga, says the issue remains to be resolved.

Lautoka High Court judge Justice John Connors has extended an injunction order sought by the Sugar Cane Growers Council until Friday afternoon.

When all parties appeared before the Lautoka High Court this afternoon lawyers for the Sugar Corporation and the Native Lands Trust Board informed Justice Connors that serious negotiations were taking place to resolve the issue.

Justice Connors has adjourned the case till Friday when he will hear what progress has been made in the talks and ordered the landowners not to block the railway line.
