New Caledonian youths reject French flag

It has now been reported that New Caledonia's youth delegation to the Pacific Youth Summit in French Polynesia refused to fly the French flag at the opening of the event.

The delegation argued that New Caledonia was an independent nation and would fly its own flag.

So, the group opted to use a banner with New Caledonia written on it.

A member of the delegation said although New Caledonia was once under French rule, they now have an independent government.

The opening was marked by a speech by the French Polynesian president, Oscar Temaru, who called on the gathering to discuss the right to self-determination of the indigenous Maohi people.
