A mayor, or pulenu'u, in Samoa is being investigated by the Ministry of Women's Affairs over claims he misused about 500 US dollars of government funding.
A senior government official says the money was intended for road maintenance as part of a government project encouraging unemployed villagers to develop agriculture.
The investigation comes after several villagers contacted the Ministry after radio reports about access roads funding from the government.
A government official, who asked that his name not be disclosed, says there have been a number of similar cases in recent years.
The pulenu'u has been suspended until the investigation is complete.
