Opponents of New Caledonia nickel mine reject so-called 'citizens pact"

10:39 am on 17 July 2006

Opponents of New Caledonia's two-billion US dollar Goro Nickel project have been dismissive of the operator's proposed so-called citizens pact to keep the enterprise on track.

The project was to be completed next year but has been faced with protests and sabotage in recent months and Goro Nickel now says it wants a new deal to get the public's support.

But the leader of the Kanak Rheebu Nuu group, Raphael Mapou says it's not up to an industrial enterprise to talk about citizenship when everybody knows Goro is about making money.

Mr Mapou says rather there should be discussions about the environment, dismissing suggestions by Goro Nickel that there is no way back.

He has not excluded further blockades to push the group's concerns.
