New Caledonian union awaiting talks with Maersk

3:16 pm on 30 June 2006

The New Caledonian USTKE union says it is expecting to start talks with a Maersk shipping company representative next week to find a solution for the port dispute.

The union argued that multi-national shipping companies setting up services to Noumea will harm other businesses and has asked for a quota system for cargo being unloaded.

An agreement has been signed with the multi-national Mediterranean Shipping Company, but the union is still waiting for negotiations with Maersk to start.

Union representative, Pierre Chauvat, says an expert from France may arrive next week.
