US companies win cattle ranch tender in Fiji

Two United States companies have won the tender to operate the Fiji government-owned Yaqara Cattle Scheme in north western Viti Levu.

Fiji TV reports that the companies are Harris Ranch, which manages more than 93,000 head of cattle in California, and Rolls International which is the US parent company of the internationally famous brand, Fiji Water.

The report says the US two companies plan to invest 15-million US dollars over the next ten years to introduce international best practices in cattle farming.

Meanwhile, Fiji's minister of state for national planning, Jone Navakamocea, has revealed in parliament that over 10-million US dollars, more than half of which was Australian aid money, has been wasted on the Yalavou Cattle Scheme.

He says the scheme has now been abandoned and concrete houses and infrastructure are lying idle.
