4:02 pm on 8 June 2006

The people of Savo and Russell Islands in Solomon Islands and Tandai area on Guadalcanal have held a reconciliation ceremony at the beach front west of Honiara.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reports that tribal chiefs of all sides led their people in the ceremony.

Initiated by the MP for Savo, Sir Allan Kemakeza, the reconciliation marks the re-union of the people of his constituency with the four main tribes of Guadalcanal.

Chiefs Ben Duva of Savo island and Stanley Toto of Tandai spoke highly of the re-unification of the parties after the unity was marred by the ethnic tension.

The ceremony included handing over of traditional foods including pigs.
