500 Fiji Sugar corporation workers set to lose their jobs

6:02 am on 8 June 2006

About 500 Fiji Sugar Corporation employees are to be made redundant at the company's four sugar mills as part of the sugar industry restructure programme.

Fiji TV reports that the Fiji Sugar and General Workers Union has signed a redundancy agreement with the corporation which is being described as a voluntary separation scheme.

The union general secretary, Felix Anthony, says they have negotiated a package based on the length of an employee's service and the number of years left to retirement.

Mr Anthony says no workers will be forced to leave and they can accept the voluntary separation package or reject it.

The company has already begun identifying workers whom it wishes to shed.
