A leader of the Samoan and Pacific Islands communities in Hamilton has been named in the Queen's Birthday Honours list for services to the Pacific Islands community.
Elisapeta Karalus is also the chief executive and the founder of the K'aute Pasifika Trust.
K'aute, a charitable trust organisation which provides health, social and education services to Pacific people, has been operating in Hamilton for six years.
Mrs Karalus, a former nurse, says the idea for the Trust resulted from health statistics which indicated that the well-being of Pacific people was poor.
"We had to do something about it - so hence the vision of setting up a one stop shop - that would provide all services to pacific people - and that's basically the model that we have had - it's pan-Pacific."
Elisapeta Karalus, who sits on a number of community organisations, says the demand for the Trust's services have increased over the years.
