Committee to check new Cooks medical school

A committee in the Cook Islands is looking into a number of issues concerning a new South Pacific medical school in Rarotonga.

The medical school, which had been approved by the Ministry of Health, Cabinet and the Cook Islands Development Investment Board, has just opened its doors to its first students.

An official with the school, Dr Edward Dick, says the first group of four students is from the United States.

He says all the school's teaching staff are also from overseas.

However sources in the Cook Islands say there are government concerns over issues such as credibility, an apparent lack of due diligence, the quality of lecturers and the curriculum.

A committee, formed by the deputy prime minister, is investigating.
