PNG government still angry over Australian refusal to take seasonal workers

Papua New Guinea's Foreign Minister Sir Rabbie Namaliu has renewed his criticism of Australia's refusal to allow in seasonal guest workers from the Pacific.

He says he could not understand why the Australian government was blocking such a scheme when there were labour shortages in Australian industries.

Sir Rabbie has told PNG National Radio that a seasonal guest worker scheme would have great benefits for Pacific Island economies and communities.

He says his disappointment about the matter has been strengthened by the recent decision by the Australian government to significantly extend the work opportunities available for visiting backpackers.
