Solomon Islands prime minister Manasseh Sogavare has told parliament that the government is committed to reforms that will empower the people to participate effectively in the economic, social and political developments of the country.

The SIBC reports Mr Sogavare saying the events of the last two weeks reflect the deeper undercurrents and the government will seek to address and find solutions to them.

He said his government endorses the planned move towards a federal system.

Mr Sogavare also says his government will recognise traditional values and customs and strive to protect fundamental rights and freedoms without undermining religious and traditional values.

The prime minister told the MPs his government will endeavour to rectify injustices because it believes injustices have haunted the people of Solomon Islands.
