Public meeting today over New Caledonia's Goro Nickel project

1:21 pm on 28 April 2006

French scientists will hold a public meeting in New Caledonia today to inform the public about their preliminary findings on the environmental impact of the Goro Nickel project.

The scientists are conducting a study which is to be finalised in October.

They met members of the territory's congress yesterday and our correspondent, Tuo Chinula, says the scientists say they need more time to do the investigation.

She says they could not give definite answers to their findings.

"They were informing the members of the public and associations and institutions of New Caledonia of the porgress that they have made so far. They haven't come up with any definite answers. They will be able to report on that at the end of their study which is scheduled for October."
