Guam has been earmarked to take thousands of US marines from Japan following a restructure.

The United States have struck a deal with Japan to relocate about 8,000 marines from Okinawa to Guam.

The Pacific Daily news reports Japan will shoulder 59-percent of the cost and finance 6.1 billion US dollars of the 10.3 billion dollar cost.

Under a mutual security pact, the US currently has 50,000 troops stationed in Japan.
