Fiji police are questioning a candidate in next month's general election in connection with an alleged attempted rape.

The candidate under questioning is a newcomer in the political arena and is contesting the Nadroga Open seat where a total of five candidates from most major political parties are standing.

Fiji TV reports that the police investigation follows a complaint from a woman that two men picked her up from Nadi on Saturday night and took her to Sigatoka where they forced her to drink alcohol.

She has told police that when one of them propositioned her and she refused, they stripped her naked and tossed her into a river.

Police say she swam to the river bank where she was found with visible facial injuries and taken to hospital.
