Samoa's ruling party names new parliamentary speaker

3:51 am on 18 April 2006

Samoa's ruling party has elected a new parliamentary speaker for a five-year term.

The Human Rights Protection Party has chosen Tolofuaivalelei Falemoe Leiataua at a caucus meeting just before breaking for the Easter holiday.

A new MP elected in the March 31st election, La'auli Leuatea Polataivao has been made the new deputy speaker.

The speaker during the last term, Toleafoa Apulu Fa'afisi, was dropped and our correspondent says this may be linked to him being chosen for a cabinet position.

The new cabinet line-up is expected to be announced this week when the government is to be sworn in.
