Fiji police send reinforcements to closed goldmine

Fiji police have sent two teams of thirty men from the Tactical Response Unit to monitor security and maintain law and order at the closed Vatukoula goldmine

The mine was closed over the Easter weekend.

Nearly, 2,000 mineworkers are due to report back today to find out their future.

The Emperor Gold Mining Company says several hundred workers will be laid off and the rest sent on training as the company tries to improve profitability.

The campany's acting general manager , Greg Shay, says they hope to start producing gold again by June.

The general secretary of the Fiji Mineworkers Union , Satish Chandra, has called for immediate government intervention.
