Son of Fiji Indian migrant is New Zealand's new Governor General

The son of a Fiji Indian couple who migrated to New Zealand has been named the country's next governor general.

New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark has appointed Judge Anand Satyanand, who also served two terms as the country's Ombudsman, to succeed Dame Silvia Cartwright when her term ends in August.

Ms Clark says Judge Satyanand would bring a broad knowledge of government and the law, as well as a deep appreciation of the groups and communities that make up contemporary New Zealand.

Judge Satyanand has described his appointment as a reflection that New Zealand is at a point where a person of different background can be identified to take the role of governor general, more so because of his Indian and Fiji-Indian background.
