PNG announces Highlands Highway upgrade

3:24 pm on 24 March 2006

The Papua New Guinea Government has announced the redevelopment of sections of the Highlands Highway for nearly 21 million US dollars.

The National newspaper reports the National Executive Council approved the redevelopment and has awarded contracts to two companies, Shorncliffe and COVEC PNG.

The Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare says the rehabilitation work on the Highlands Highway will be entirely funded by his government.

Sir Michael says it is the first time such a major infrastructure project is fully funded by the PNG Government.

He says the commencement of the redevelopment of the highway is proof of the commitment to the travelling public and the business community that use the road.

Sir Michael says the scope of the roadwork would include re-gravelling and resealing, line-markings and erection of road signs and bridge maintenance.
