American Samoan Senates begins probe into leases

10:29 am on 21 March 2006

The American Samoan Senate has started a probe into companies that lease lots at the government owned Tafuna Industrial Park.

According to the government there are 38 companies holding leases at the industrial park not including sub-leases.

The majority of the leases are for more than 10 years.

The Senate President, Lolo Moliga, has requested complete information from the Attorney General's Office on how much each tenant pays monthly, which tenant is behind in payments, and detailed expenditures with all collected revenues for fiscal years 2005 and 2006.

Lolo says the leases are guaranteed revenue-making for the government but collection has not been enforced, which he says makes it unfair for tenants that are paying their leases on a timely manner.
