John Howard called on to step in over killings in Indonesia's Papua province

The Australian Greens Senator, Kerry Nettle, has called on the Australian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister to ensure Indonesia stops the killings in Papua province.

Senator Nettle says John Howard and Alexander Downer need to step in and ensure the Indonesian government stops using lethal force against protestors there.

She says the recent escalation of violence in the province is shocking and as responsible neighbours with a commitment to human rights Australia needs to do all it can to ensure that the bloodshed does not continue or escalate.

The Senator says the use of lethal force by the Indonesian authorities is not helping to calm the situation.

Senator Nettle says the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister often boast of the close relationship Canberra has with Indonesia.

She say now is the time to ring President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and call on him to stop the use of lethal force there.
