Fiji lawyer says minister has authority to sack military boss

4:50 pm on 17 March 2006

A senior Fiji lawyer says the President has to sack the army commander if asked to do so by the Home Affairs minister.

Richard Naidu says the Constitution states that the President has to appoint as commander any person recommended by the minister and that person is then subjected to the minister's control.

Mr Naidu's comments come amid a long-running confrontation between army commander Commodore Frank Bainimarama and the government.

According to a report in the Fiji Times, talks between Commodore Bainimarama and Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase have broken down and the relationship remains icy.
