There are hopes that support from New Zealand for education in Tonga will have far-reaching results.

The New Zealand Foreign Minister, Winston Peters, has just completed a short tour of Tonga and he says a key focus of New Zealand's aid contribution is towards education.

New Zealand and the World Bank have teamed up and together are providing around 10 million US dollars to improve the quality and access to basic education.

Mr Peters says the programme will help ensure that every child, regardless of family background or circumstances, will attend well-resourced schools.
