American Samoan soldiers welcomed home

3:22 pm on 14 March 2006

The last units of the 100th Battalion 442nd Infantry from American Samoa deployed to Iraq were officially welcomed home by the military over the weekend.

A crowd of nearly 500 packed the army reserve center at Tafuna on Saturday to greet the Bravo and Charlie companies.

Our correspondent there says it was an upbeat ceremony though tinged with sadness

following the death of Sargeant Frank Tia'i, who died last July, just a few days before he was to come home.

Brigadier General John Ma Commander of the 9th Regional Readiness Support Command

paid tribute to all the soliders at the ceremony.

"We are so proud of you and we thank you for your service for the past year. You have carried on the proud tradition of the citizen soldier - when our country needed you - you were there."
