Solomon women want consultation over development

The National Council of Women in Solomon Islands says a lack of consultation over developments is a major election issue for women.

The council's president Hilda Kari says she welcomes women standing for next month's election to raise women's issues.

She says many women are concerned about an increasing number of big developments in the provinces that are given the go-ahead without proper consultation.

Hilda Kari says villages suffer dramatic side-effects to everyday life and benefits of the development often doesn't go to them.

"We are very concerned about a lot of things. We need more women at leadership levels in order to talk about and to make sure decisions made have the voice of women and that women and men together."
