Samoa's police commissioner, Papali'i Lorenese Neru, says they are yet to charge a man they have in custody after a shooting attack on a former cabinet minister.

Vaai Papu Vaai, who is contesting this month's election as an independent, was hit with a blast from a shotgun in Falealupo village on Saturday.

The Commissioner says Mr Vaai was able to travel from Savaii to Upolu by plane and is in a stable condition at Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital in Apia.

He says police are still not sure of the events surrounding the shooting.

"Our investigations are still continuing but he had gone to a village meeting. The course of the whole incident will not be known until the officers have finished with their investigations."
