Forum draws up youth volunteer scheme

2:05 pm on 7 March 2006

The Forum secretariat is helping to design a new Pacific Regional Volunteer Scheme for young people.

The scheme is part of the Pacific Plan and Pacific Youth Strategy 2010.

Youth Development Advisor, Tangata Vainerere, says they are currently sourcing donor funding and calling for tenders to develop the idea.

He says young people aged between 16 and 30 from member countries will be eligible to take part.

"We are thinking of establishing the scheme to enable these young people to have the opportunity for these young people to go to another country and have at least a year serving in community projects within communities that they visit and also give the opportunity for them to gain skills while doing that."

Tangata Vainerere says the proposal will be tabled in at the next Forum meeting in Tonga.
