New research suggests that juice from the fruit of a tree which grows in the wild in Pacific Islands may help to stop diseases linked to smoking.

Researchers at the University of Illinois in the United States have found that adult smokers who drink noni or nonu juice, had significantly lower cholesterol, and triglycerides.

Researchers gave 106 current smokers between one and four ounces of noni juice daily for a month.

The noni plant was used for traditional healing throughout Polynesia and has been promoted internationally for all kinds of diseases and health benefits.

The director of clinical science for the University of Hawaii cancer centre, Carolyn Gotay, said the study was exciting but needs to be confirmed with other studies.
