Unionist in plantation row to stand in Solomons election

9:13 am on 4 March 2006

The General Secretary of the National Union of Workers Tony Kagovai is contesting the Savo and Russells constituency in the Solomon Islands election in April.

Mr Kagovai has been leading strike action by workers at the Russell Islands copra and cocoa plantation.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation says three indigenous Russell Islanders will be contesting the elections, and Mr Kagovai's intention to contest the election will further split the voters in the constituency.

More than 800 workers at RIPEL have been on strike for more than a year, saying they can't work under the general manager, John Whiteside.
