A group of Papuan students have reportedly attacked a office building in the Indonesian capital Jakarta used by the US gold mining company Freeport.
The Jakarta Post reports that up to 20 Papuan students broke windows and damaged facilities in the lobby of the building in the pre-dawn attack yesterday, and 13 people have since been arrested in connection with the incident.
Freeport McMoran closed its Grasberg mine in Papua province for a second day running yesterday after locals set up barricades, demanding permission to sift through the mine waste for valuable minerals.
The blockades followed clashes on a road outside the mine on Tuesday that left at least five people injured.
The company says it hopes to resume operations soon, but the mine remains closed, while its negotiations with the alleged illegal miners continue.
