Voters in Solomon Islands will go to the polls on the fifth of April to elect a new government.

The date was announced yesterday by the Governor General Sir Nathaniel Waena.

The chief electoral officer, Musu Kevu, says nominations open today and the returning officer will make decisions after two weeks on the acceptability of these prospective candidates.

He says the roll is still being updated but is currently believed to be more than 340 thousand.
