Solomon Island Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a stillborn human foetus which was found on Wednesday morning near the Chinatown Police Post.

A man who lives nearby discovered the foetus as he returned home from work.

Forensic officers and Detectives from Central CID are investigating the incident.

The investigation is yet to identify the mother, however police say they have grave concerns for the health and wellbeing of the mother.

Provincial Police Commander Chief Superintendent Edmond Sikua says Forensic Officers will arrange a medical scientific examination of the foetus to ascertain how far advanced the pregnancy was and if there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding the stillbirth.

Mr Sikua says the scientific evidence is one part of the investigation.

He says they need to ascertain if any suspicious circumstances exist, but in the meantime the welfare of the mother needs to be considerd.
