The Papua New Guinean central province disaster coordinator's office is handing out food and short-term shelter to about 11,000 people hit by flooding.

Heavy rain in recent weeks damaged many houses and food gardens, and forced hundreds of people from their homes.

Disaster officials are assessing what needs to be done, and as the local coordinator, Sidney Tau, explains, they have also given help.

"The government has seen fit to provide them with temporary building materials to assist locals to put up their temporary homes at this point in time."
