Four Tongan fishermen rescued by a New Zealand boat have described how they survived 22 days at sea.

The crew of the Solander Four, part of the New Zealand fishing company Solander's Fiji fishing fleet, picked up the men about 200 miles south of Suva.

Solander spokesman David Lucas says the Tongan fishermen were weeping when the crew rescued them on Friday afternoon after nearly three weeks at sea.

He says they survived by catching and drinking rainwater, and two of the men were very weak.
