Samoa to get a new TV channel

7:04 pm on 9 February 2006

The chief executive of a new television station says he believes Samoa needs a new station to give it new perspectives on important issues.

Tuiasau Uelese Petaia says LAU TV will broadcast 24 hours a day and will be a predominately news and current affairs station.

Tuiasau says he felt the public needed an alternative to the state-owned Samoa Broadcasting Corporation.

He says the timing of the tomorrows launch is to give LAU TV time to preview next months elections.

"The backbone of our programming will be news and current affairs and we hope that we will be able to provide the people of Samoa with information that is vital to their making decisions on events that effect their lives."

Tuiasau says the station has also obtained rights to broadcast some Super 14 rugby matches through Fiji Television.

LAU TV is only the second television station in Samoa. The state-owned Samoa Broadcasting Corporation is the other.
