Papua New Guinea has announced a total of US$13 million in aid to Solomon Islands for development purposes.

The Solomon Islands foreign minister Laurie Chan said the amount had been confirmed during a visit to Honiara by his PNG counterpart, Sir Rabbie Namaliu.

The issue of assistance to Solomon Islands was first discussed in 1997 by the PNG and Solomons governments.

Mr Chan said Solomon Islands had already received part of this money, and it was being used to build the Solomon Islands High Commission Chancery Office in Port Moresby and to pay for scholarships for Solomon Islanders in PNG institutions.
